A gas engineer who left The Swinley pub at risk after not doing installation work to required standards has been fined.

Philip Payne, of Brook Avenue, Ruby Brook, Ascot, was fined £1,300 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The court heard how the 49-year-old trading as Wentworth Plumbing and Heating, installed a gas boiler in the kitchen at the Brockenhurst Road pub - despite not being registered for such work.

It heard how between August 1-14, 2009, he carried out engineering maintenance in the catering kitchen, but did not do it in line with appropriate standards, leaving it at risk.

Payne was registered with the Gas Safe Register for gas installation on domestic boilers, but was not covered for commercial catering installations.

The court heard how faulty work was discovered by an engineer carrying out repairs to the cooking range under warranty who then filed a report.

Gas Safe Register and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated, discovering Mr Payne was not registered for commercial gas maintenance work.

Payne pleaded guilty to breaching section three and five of the gas safety installation and use regulations 1998.
