Eton's diamond jubilee plans

Q1Historic Eton has three big projects on the go as the town gets ready to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Architect Ron Lewandowski, who is based in the town as well as being an Eton Town councillor, hopes they will be ready in good time for the celebrations.

The first plan is to create a new Jubilee Square on the site next to the Baldwin Institute at the junction with Eton Court. It will be financed by the Town Council and the Institute and has already been given planning permission by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

The other big plan, to be financed by Eton Town Council, is for two half arches of stainless steel, five and a half metres high that will face each other on the Windsor Eton Bridge. Companies or individuals who contribute to it will be able to have their logo or name on the arch.

The third project will see the Baldwin Bridge painted and cleaned up.

Cllr Lewandowski said: "We hope to create a permanent snapshop of what Eton was like in 2012 when the Queen celebrated her diamond jubilee. The arch will even have some familiar Eton names on it."

Planning permission for the arch is still needed.

The town's jubilee street party will be from 11am to late on Tuesday, June 5 when the High Street will be lined with tables in a replica of last year's royal wedding celebrations.
