Telecommunications firm BT has confirmed it is in 'highly preliminary' talks to buy the O2 mobile network from Spanish company Telefnica.

BT released a statement to the London Stock Exchange this morning in response to press speculation about the proposed deal with Telefnica UK, which is based in Slough.
