Funeral held for Flackwell Heath poppy legend
A funeral 'worthy of a field marshal' was held for ex-SAS soldier and legendary Flackwell Heath poppy seller Harry Merryweather on Friday.
And the Royal British Legion (RBL) has announced it will be planting a memorial tree and naming an annual award in his honour.
More than 200 mourners gathered at Christ Church, in Chapel Road on Friday to pay tribute to the inspirational 89-year-old who raked in thousands for the legion.
Flackwell RBL chairman George O'Leary also paid tribute to his friend, who died at home in Fennels Way last month.
"The church and the gallery was packed. It was perfect," he told the Advertiser after the service, which was led by the Reverend Chris Bull.
"You would have thought we were putting down a field marshall."
