Sea cadets mark Trafalgar Day
Young cadets lined up to commemorate one of the most important days in British history yesterday.
The Berkshire district sea cadets corps stood to attention in Slough to mark Trafalgar Day.
It honours Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805.
The parade which travelled down the High Street included about 130 cadets and 40 staff from all seven units from across the district.
They had come from Slough, Maidenhead, Windsor, Henley, Basingstoke, Reading and Newbury.
They were inspected and gave the salute to High Sheriff of Berkshire Captain Robert Woods.
Mayor of Slough, Sukhjit Dhaliwal, was also a guest along with Slough MP Fiona Mactaggart, Councillor Peter Dale-Gough and former mayor Don Hewitt.
The district cup for best unit went to Maidenhead with Slough second and Windsor third.
Chief petty officer Stuart Spencer, commanding officer for Slough, said: "It went very well and there was a good bunch of smart cadets.
"A lot of things are being forgotten but this is one thing the British are still good at."
Trafalgar Day officially took place on October 21 and remembers the famous sea battle which put a stop to the possibility of Napoleon invading Britain.
