Home births soar in Windsor thanks to midwife initiative

Home births are on the rise in and around Windsor - thanks to a new midwife led initiative.

It has operated since February, offering mums in Windsor, Datchet, Wraysbury, Eton and Ascot the chance to be assessed to see if they are suitable for a home birth.

Three quarters of those offered the assessment seized the opportunity.

Jackie Young, lead midwife for the Windsor team, said: "We have noticed that women progress very well at home in their own environment, relaxed in the knowledge that they do not have to make the journey into hospital."

The team, which operates as part of the Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, also organises monthly ‘positive birth group’ meetings.

Jackie said: “We held our fifth recently and had an amazing turnout of 35 people, which included many prospective parents and those with babes in arms who had come to share their positive birth stories.”
