Maidenhead 2nds 26, Clifton 2nds 29
With professional rugby having ground to a halt, and the suspension of the season following a few days after, all eyes were on Maidenhead 2nds as they took on Clifton Rugby 2nds at Braywick Park on Saturday.
The game managed to survive the cull of sport because of the corona-virus and an entertaining game was played.
Maids took the lead through Rorie Hannigan’s barnstorming run and the extras were slotted to give the 2nds an early 7-0 lead. Hannigan cut a lovely line off the shoulder of Duncan Jones who found his teammate to put him in close to the posts.
It was one of Jones’ last contributions to the contest however, and the game was held up for a period while the player was taken off with a nasty-looking arm injury.
The disruption appeared to give Clifton a lift and they capitalised on a Maidenhead fumble of the ball to go over the whitewash before settling into their stride and running in another to make it 7-12. Clifton started the second half with a bang, charging in for their third try to seemingly put the game out of reach for the 2nds, however, Maids quickly hit back with a try from short range by Ed Keohane, with the extras slotted by Mike Davies. A powerful surge from the home side’s pack was then finished off by Elio Mandozzi. And with Davies slotting the extras Maids were back in front.
However, Maids players got embroiled and distracted by an on field altercation and Clifton took advantage of this loss of focus to score their fourth try. A penalty was added to make it 29-21, but there was still time for Maids to round off the scoring with a try in the corner from Warwick Palmer. The conversion was missed but the two sides had served up a cracking game of rugby. If it does prove to be the last game played at Braywick Park this season it was a fine way for both clubs to bow out.
