Magpies acquit themselves well in friendly defeat to Oxford United Women

Maidenhead United Women were back in action at the weekend, playing a post-season friendly against Oxford United Women at United's plush training ground.

The Magpies, whose fourth tier FA Women’s National League Division 1 South West season was abandoned due to lockdown restrictions, were playing higher level opposition, with the FAWNL Southern Premier side having bowed out of the Women’s FA Cup just a week earlier following a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Conversely, Maidenhead hadn't played since their 4-0 defeat at Billericay Town in the first round of the competition back on December 13.

Therefore it was a good, competitive first run out for the Magpies on a sunny, if blustery, afternoon. The Magpies had the best chance of a goalless first half, with Vicky Carvill's effort missing the target, but the hosts, with the wind by now behind them, scored twice in the second half through Isabella Wordsworth and Steph Bent to run out winners. Coach Nev Saroya was delighted with his team’s performance considering the lengthy lay off. The team continues to train three times a week and any players interested in having a trial should contact Saroya at

Maidenhead United Women have been awarded a grant from the Football Foundation’s Return to Football Fund to help grow grassroots participation in the area.

The money will be used to help the club kickstart training and matches again following the easing of lockdown restrictions, but also to recruit new players and cover the cost of adapting to new COVID-19 measures.

The £2.1m return to football fund has been targeted at groups whose participation levels have been affected by the pandemic. Clubs have been offered up to £2,500 each.

Maidenhead Women’s coach Nev Saroya said: “This grant will make a huge difference to running the team. We are grateful to the Football Foundation for this invaluable support.”
