England once again triumphed at the British Isles Indoor Bowls Council’s (BIIBC) Women’s u25s competition, which was staged for the first time at Desborough Bowling Club over the weekend.

England’s women came into the competition as heavy favourites and they prevailed against their home nations rivals, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Play begun on Saturday morning and ran through until Sunday afternoon at the venue in Green Lane.

The holders once again lifted the Acle Trophy after once again showing their character, and the precision of their bowling when the pressure was on.

Desborough have said they’re proud of have hosted the best young female players in the country and hope the event, which was only £5 for spectators, will entice more young people to take up the sport.

Bowls is often viewed as a sport for more mature players, but the under 25s showed this was far from the case in a series of gripping indoor matches.

The event was first established in 1997, and England have now won 25 of the last 28 titles. The last team to prevent England lifting the trophy was Scotland, back in 2024.

Having now successfully staged the competition, Desborough hopes the club’s facilities will be in the frame for future events of this size and scale.

It is already establishing links and partnerships with schools and community groups in the area, offering young people the chance to have a bowl and see if they’ve got the eye for the sport. It plans to launch junior coaching programmes and develop one of the country’s few academies to bring through the best young players from the region.
