Burnham denied a shock win at Highworth Town after keeper is stretchered off with a broken jaw

A FREAK accident saw Burnham’s goalkeeper stretchered off with a broken jaw as the league’s stragglers held leaders Highworth Town to a 1-1 draw.

The Blues travelled to Wiltshire on Saturday propping up the Hellenic League Premier Division in last place.

But within 20 minutes they had given themselves a glimmer of hope of hauling themselves out of the doldrums, Conrad Joseph scoring for the second game on the spin. But the game was turned on its head shortly after as keeper Kyle Bradley was forced off to be replaced by centre half Tom Kemp.

Burnham boss Alan Paris said: “We were playing really good and then the goalie broke his jaw it really unbalanced us. It didn’t look like a bad challenge, the ball came in from a free kick and he held it but then kind of dropped it and their player went in.

“Because he didn’t have it in both hands he let it go and the player went in and accidentally kneed him in the jaw.”

Table-topping Town capitalised on Burnham’s misfortune shortly before the break when Daniel Drewett volleyed home from outside the box to make it 1-1 at the break.

Paris added: “We were winning 1-0 when our goalie got carried off and we had to put our centre back in goal and to be fair, the goal they scored, had we had a proper goalie he would probably have saved it.”

Burnham boss Alan Paris has rued an ‘admin error’ which cost his side three points and leaves them rooted to the bottom of the Hellenic League Premier Division.

The Blue were slapped with the penalty by league authorities for fielding an ineligible player in the team’s 1-0 home victory over Lydney Town on Saturday, December 2.

Speaking about the ruling, former Leicester and Watford player Paris, who took over at the Gore in October, said: “It [punishment] could be a matter of three points being the difference between staying up or going down.

“It’s a disappointing admin error.”
