Work to construct a new skatepark at a recreation ground in Twyford is set to begin in the New Year.

The original skatepark in King George V Recreation Ground was built nearly 20 years ago and a project was initiated last year with the aim of providing a new facility at the site.

The Twyford Skatepark Project has been a collaborative effort between Twyford Parish Council, local skaters and Maverick Industries, who were awarded the tender after contractors were asked to submit bids.

The consultation phase, which featured feedback from users of all skill levels and ages, has played a ‘crucial role’ in the design to create a space that is both inspiring and functional for all users, including skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users, the parish council said.

The new facility will include a ‘modern, safe and accessible design’, with a variety of obstacles, ramps and flow areas.

The layout of the new skate park has been designed with the intention of ‘fostering a positive and inclusive environment for users of all abilities’.

Skateboarder Stephen Dearing, said: “I am very proud to be part of this exciting project which will provide a much needed upgrade to the current facility.

“The new park will be more accessible, inclusive and fun for all extreme sports enthusiasts.”

Skateboarder Guy Branston, said: “I have so many memories skating at this park and progressing as a skater with great people.

“I cannot wait to have an even better time at what will be an amazing facility for the community.

“Thanks to everyone for their help and contributions.”

The project has been funded by Twyford Parish Council with contributions from Haines Hill, Sport England, The Piggott School, Twyford Round Table, Ruscombe Parish Council, Twyford Together and a number of local businesses who donated rewards to the Crowdfunder.

Skatepark users attended events throughout the summer promoting the fundraiser with their slogan ‘Buy a pint of concrete’.

The new skatepark will require around 131,000 pints of concrete to build, the parish council revealed.

Skateboarder Thomas Hicks, said: “I’m really happy to have been involved with something so beneficial to the skateboarding community and to the wider community.

“Thanks to everyone who has helped out along the way.”

The project features its own logo and skatepark merchandise which is available to buy, with profits going to the transformation work.

Funds raised will go towards extra features at the new facility including benches around the park and a skateboard/scooter tool station.

The Polehampton Trust has also funded some skateboard workshops.

Martin Alder, chairman at Twyford Parish Council, said: “We look forward to its completion when we will be holding an appropriate opening celebration of this great new facility for the village.”

The construction work is expected to take ‘several months to complete’ and there may be ‘some disruption’ around the site during this period.

The parish council has also thanked all those who took part in the consultation process and contributed their ideas and feedback.

Skateboarder Vincent Whiteman, said: “It’s so good to see all the hard work the volunteers, Twyford Parish Council and everyone who donated to the cause, reach the next step.

“This new park will be such a fun and accessible space for everyone to explore their creativity, keep fit and make new friends along the way.”

More updates will be provided as the project progresses.
