Burnham boss Ben Murray
--
Farnham Town 6, Burnham 0
Burnham's hopes of progressing to the latter stages of the FA Vase this season were obliterated in a 6-0 defeat to Farnham Town on Saturday.
Ben Murray's side travelled to the Memorial Ground for the tie off the back of four very positive results in all competitions, however, they met their match against a Farnham Town side riding high at the top of the equivalent Combined Counties Premier Division South Division.
Farnham have proved nigh on unbeatable this season, losing just once in all competitions to Chesham United in the FA Cup. Flackwell Heath also pushed them close in that competition, going down 2-1 at Wilks Park in an earlier round, but that solitary home defeat to Chesham aside, they've won every match in every other competition they've played in this season.
Heading into Saturday's tie they sat top of their division with a flawless record of 13 wins from 13, having notched four or more goals in five of their last six matches.
It was a daunting prospect for Murray and his players, but the manager would have tried his best to convince them they'd be on a similar level to Farnham. Unfortunately, to all intents and purposes, Farnham are a higher-level quality side, especially on their own turf, and while Burnham were able to live with them until half-time, they were left for dust after the interval.
Daryl Sanders, who netted twice in the tie, fired the hosts ahead after 12 minutes, with Adam Liddle doubling Farnham's advantage eight minutes later.
Burnham's defences weren't breached again until the 50th minute, when Owen Dean found the net and the floodgates opened after that with Sanders making it 4-0 in the 54th minute and Shamal Edwards and Joseph Thomas Jackson rounding off the scoring to make the final score 6-0.
Farnham advance to the fourth round where they'll host Bridgwater United on Saturday, January 13.
Burnham are back in league cup action tomorrow evening when they host Ardley United at the 1878 Stadium. They're also on home turf for the visit of Virginia Water this Saturday and will be looking to continue their recent good form in the league. Two routine home wins over Harefield United (2-0) and Ardley United (4-0) have lifted the Blues to 10th in the table with matches in hand on every team above them in the table. They're currently seven points off the play-offs, and Murray has stated his goal is to get the side back in contention for the top five between now and the end of the season. Beating fifth placed Virginia Water will go some way towards achieving that.
