Bolton: I will give youth a chance at Maidenhead RFC

Russell Bolton says Maidenhead RFC have done their business early and concluded all their new player deals unless an ‘outstanding opportunity presents itself’.

The head coach has also underlined that the club is looking to blood young players in the senior squad especially after the national success of the colts team last month.

The club has already announced the signings of backs Niall Crossley from Preston Grasshoppers and Olly Foxley from Redingensians, but Bolton says there is still one more player to come.

“We have one more player in the pipeline, it’s pretty much done and dusted, but we still have to tie up some loose ends,” he said.

“We’ll also be announcing an addition to our coaching staff. Then that’s us done unless an outstanding opportunity presents itself.

“We have a lot of good young players and we need gaps in the squad to feed in these players. We need to look to build the club around our successful colts which could stand us in good stead for the next 10 years.”

Bolton said Maids have a number of players returning from university, some deferring university and there are also walk-ins, all boosting squad numbers.

One who won’t be at Braywick next season is flay-half Sam Angell, as Bolton explains

“Sam has gone back to Chinnor after a stop-start season for us,” he said. “I think there were family issues based around travelling here every Saturday, plus he picked up injuries and never really got going.”

He added: “Will Cadden has left to try to play at a higher level, but apart from that, as far as I know, everyone else is still on board.”

First up for Bolton’s squad will be a home match against Brixham on September 1.

Bolton said he wasn’t reading too much into the fixtures.

“For the last three years, I have been used to playing the first game away. It means we will not be at home for the last game, which is always nice, but it gives us a chance to grow some early confidence.”
