Maidenhead United squad is stronger, says chairman Griffin

Peter Griffin believes Maidenhead United have a stronger all-round squad than last season, giving manager Alan Devonshire real options heading into Saturday’s first National League match of the season at home to Gateshead.

The Magpies chairman is excited by the prospect of the campaign ahead and the new players for fans to watch.

“We have had a really good pre-season, not just looking at the results, but the way the players have gelled,” he said.

“The way some of the players have performed has left Dev (Alan Devonshire) with some selection headaches, which is good from our perspective.

“Some really have stepped up. I’m optimisitic about the season.”

However, Griffin accepts that after finishing 12th in their inaugural campaign, there is a weight of expectation.

He said; “Second season syndrome is a real thing, the stats prove that. But Dev is well aware of that and although we lost five or six players, none were a surprise and we have recruited well.

“It’s fair to say Dev got the players he was targetting.”

He added: “I think we have a stronger squad than last season, but the big unknown is other clubs and how they will perform.

“We now have a lot of pace in the squad and a lot of competition.

“There’s a good balance of youth with Josh Kelly, Max Kilman and Sean McCormack in, plus real experience.

“There's a chance for one of the younger guys or the new players like Ryan Bird or Max Worsfeld or Nana Owusu to make themselves a fans’ favourite, and maybe write themselves into Magpies folkore.”

Griffin also highlighted how the Magpies have raised their game off the pitch.

“We have learned a lot in the last two years,” he said.

“Last year we didn't know how much we didn’t know! Now we are in a better place.

“With the people we have in place now, we are looking to hone what we do and provide a real matchday experience for fans which we hope they’ll appreciate.”

Assessing the season ahead, Griffin added; “Goodness knows where you could finish in this league especially if you get off to a good start.

“And yet we also know that we struggled against some of the bottom teams last year.

“In this league anything is possible.”
