Maidenhead United manager Alan Devonshire not shocked by York Road exits

It may have been a week of outgoings at Maidenhead United, but manager Alan Devonshire remains confident with the business being done at York Road ahead of the new season, after admitting he has known for some time that players would be leaving the club.

The Magpies have enjoyed a busy close season with no fewer than five players joining the club, but the York Road faithful have also seen last season’s top scorer Adrian Clifton depart, as well as Harold Odametey, Carl Pentney and Ayo Obileye, Nana Owusu , Ryan Bird and Max Worsfold.

Obileye joined Ebbsfleet United on Tuesday, while Bird became the second Magpie to join Slough Town this summer after Worsfold made the move last month.

Despite the departures, Devonshire had always known that the players were leaving and explained that it came as no shock to him when the players did move on.

“I always knew they would be leaving,” said Devonshire.

“I knew Ayo (Obileye) , Adrian (Clifton), Harold (Odametey) and Carl (Pentney) were going to leave –  Max (Worsfold) and Ryan (Bird) as well – no one has come as a shock to me.

“It’s no secret and at the end of the day there are players who have left that I wanted to keep.

“I’m not going to name them but nothing has come as a shock to me.”

With over a month or so to go until the Magpies kick off their pre-season campaign, Devonshire is still confident that players will come through the door at Maidenhead.

With targets in talks with the club, the manager has been pleased with how business is going and is looking to get more players to sign on ahead of the 2019/20 National League campaign.

“I knew that this was happening (players leaving the club),” added Devonshire.

“We’ve been in talks with players but it’s not always easy to get things over the line.

“But we’ve got the keeper that I wanted to get.

We’ve got a few young lads in as well, an experienced player on the right too – there’s plenty of positives.

“We’ve got targets. We want to bring four or five in.

“I think over the next couple of weeks there will be more news.”s
