Maidenhead United academy fell just short of claiming some silverware in Barcelona last weekend as they narrowly lost 1-0 to Combinado De Bizkaia in the 2019 Cataluyna Cup final.

The young Magpies navigated a tough group stage after a 2-0 win over Winstable Academy in match one which was followed by a  3-1 victory over Sweden’s Södra Sandby IF.

Reece Smith was in potent form, scoring three times in the group as Maidenhead advanced to the knockout stages.

Smith opened the scoring against Dover Athletic before Kamil Sowa wrapped up the semi-final with a header.

It was heartbreak for the youngsters in the final as they could not find a way past Combinado De Bizkaia, but Smith’s goal scoring exploits did mean he went home as the tournament’s stop scorer.
