Grant rejects offer from Bracknell to stay at Marlow for another season

Simon Grant has committed himself to Marlow FC for another season, much to Mark Bartley’s delight, as the goalkeeper was announced to have rejected a ‘better financial package’ from rivals Bracknell Town.

The Robins have already prised striker James Clark away from the Alfred Davis Memorial Ground and were in the market to bring a new no.1 to Larges Lane with Grant top of their shopping list this summer.

However, on Monday evening, Marlow’s Twitter account confirmed the stopper will be staying with the Blues for at least another campaign, with boss Bartley expressing his joy on retaining Grant’s services.

The tweet read: ‘I’m delighted to have Simon Grant signing for another season, with us at Marlow. For me, he is the best goalkeeper in the league and if we are to be successful this year it’s important that we keep hold of our best players.

“We want to build on the solid defensive record we’ve established over the last few years, and he is a key part of that.

“Simon turned down a better financial package from Bracknell this summer and I think that demonstrates two things; one, that they also view him as the best in the league, and two, that he is absolutely committed to the Marlow cause. Phil [Brown] has done an excellent job to keep pushing Granty to improve, and I’m pleased that they can continue this work over the coming season.”

The Blues have also recently announced the return of Coggeshall Town striker Nnamdi Nwachuku who reunites with boss Mark Bartley on a one-year deal.

Nwachuku previously spent time at Marlow during the 2019-20 season but was unfortunately hampered with injury for much of his short spell at the Alfred Davis Memorial Ground.

He managed to score three goals in the three matches he was fit for the Blues, before making the switch back to the Seed Growers, finding the net another 11 times in the remainder of the campaign.

Last season was slightly less bountiful with the striker scoring just four in 10 matches. However, the form was good enough for Bartley who has been focused on bringing in goals following the prolific James Clark’s departure.

On Twitter, Bartley said: “I’m thrilled to bring Nnamdi back to the club after his short, but highly effective, spell here a couple of seasons back. My primary focus during the summer was to add more goals, and ruthlessness, to the front end of our team. This signing certainly helps us to achieve that.

“We want to be challenging at the top end of the league, and to do that you need goals, and that’s something Nnamdi has historically provided in abundance. Anyone that knows anything about our level understands what he will add, and so its an undoubted great addition to the squad. The squad doesn’t need major surgery, and I’ve committed to only adding quality, Nnamdi meets that criteria. I’m sure you’ll all join me in welcoming him to the club.”
