Summer reached its climax for Maidenhead Tennis Club on Sunday with its annual finals day which highlighted the club’s strength in depth, particularly at junior level.

A total of 46 senior and junior finals were played, all of which were hotly contested.

Among the open winners, there was a new men’s singles winner in Lewis Brown who beat Charlie Pridmore 6-0 6-1.

Brown and Pridmore were later involved in a very tight men’s doubles match against their older opponents Gavin Burrows and Sanjo Mathew, eventually winning 7-5 7-6.

The mixed doubles was won by Boris Ribicic and Claire Roberts who defeated Rob Castignetti and Nasreen Brittain 6-4 7-5.

The two main women’s finals were contested by junior players.

The singles title was won by Xanthe Ashe who beat Daisy Doherty 6-4, 6-1, while the women’s doubles title went to Eva and Jemma Lancaster who beat Ashe and Doherty 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

In her speech at the awards ceremony club chairman Sue Topchik praised everyone who had taken part, commenting on the success of the juniors in the senior women’s tournament.

She was supported by head coach Nigel Mann, who said the club had performed strongly overall in Berkshire tennis.

He added: “The club has also been appointed an LTA Local Player Development Centre, one of only 50 in the country.

“This means it will play an important role in helping develop talented children in the area.”
