1980: Wally the Werewolf was rushed back to makers I.E.S. Projects in White Waltham for an emergency operation following serious leg trouble (main picture).
Wally was an animated prop which had gone on display at the Palladium Cellars – London’s newest tourist attraction.
An ‘ambulance’ was hired to transport Wally for emergency repairs after one of his long hairy legs was left hanging from his hip joint.
1985: The tranquillity of Dean Lane in Cookham was disturbed when a film crew and team of actors turned up to film part of a screenplay by John Mortimer.
The series, Paradise Postponed, was a family saga featuring Michael Horden, David Threfall, Richard Vernon, Annette Crosby and Bryan Pringle.
1985: Television personality and Thames Valley Adventure Playground patron Terry Wogan was guest of honour at the facility.
Terry formally opened a £30,000 extension to the log cabin built just in time for the playground’s third anniversary fete.
1995: TV newscaster and presenter Mary Nightingale – just back from covering the Rugby World Cup in South Africa – presented the prizes at Herries School’s speech day.
Citing highlights from the year, headmaster David Hare spoke of how the Marsh Meadow conservation project at Cookham Moor had been incorporated into science lessons, of history brought alive by a recreation of a VE Day street party, and of music, dance and drama.
2000: Rugby chief Clive Woodward showed his team spirit when he helped out at the Ridgeway School concert and prize-giving.
The England coach had a son at the school, with another set to join in September.
2000: The Advertiser’s very own Norbert the Newshound helped launch an exciting programme of summer holiday activities at the Magnet Leisure Centre.
Every week, the Magnet was running summer camps, ranging from fun-packed Crazy Gangs with games and crafts, to sport-focused camps and adventure sessions with cycling, skiing, orienteering and ski-bobbing.
