Ascot United manager Jamie Tompkins believes Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final win will give his side the confidence boost they need to end the season on a high.
The Hellenic Premier side have stuttered somewhat in 2019, with their last league win coming before the new year, but they have enjoyed a positive cup run and that continued last weekend as they beat close rivals Wantage Town 1-0 thanks to a well taken Kai Walters goal. The forward rounded the goalkeeper before finishing well from a tight angle.
“It was very good win for us,” Tompkins said.
“We’ve been playing as well as we have been recently but this time we had that little bit of luck and the effort was brilliant.
“It was a really good performance and we dominated large parts of the game and we managed to hold on. They are a very good side and we had to defend. The boys were brilliant.”
The victory means Ascot United will face local rivals Windsor FC in the final on May 6 and Tompkins is hoping that Saturday’s win gives his side the confidence boost they deserve.
“Confidence is key. We know we have been playing well recently but we just haven’t had the luck.” Added Tompkins.
“But hopefully that semi-final win sparks some confidence in the squad. I know we can finish the season extremely well because we have a strong squad.
“The Cup final is going to be extremely tough. We know Windsor well and they know us well. It will be an excellent game with a lot of goals – hopefully for us.”
Ascot will be looking to get their league campaign back on track, as they look for their first league win of 2019 on Saturday when they take on third-pace Brackley Town Saints away from home in a 3pm kick off.
