The GB duo of Jack Beaumont and Angus Groom, rowing for Leander, won the Double Sculls Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in a record time.
Beaumont, from Maidenhead, and Groom overcame the O’Donovan brothers from Skibbereen Rowing Club, Ireland, crossing the line in 6mins 46secs, smashing the previous record by two seconds.
For Beaumont it was a remarkable seventh consecutive victory at Henley.
One of the most eagerly anticipated finals of the regatta was the last race of the day, the Fawley Cup, in which holders Windsor Boys School Boat Club broke the course record in overcoming the much-fancied Maidenhead Rowing Club.
Heading into the contest, the holders were arguably underdogs as the Maidenhead quad of Victor Kleshnev, Edoardo Marshall, Elliott Kemp and Harrison Rowe were racing off the back of victories in the Schools’ Head and the championship quads at the National Schools’ Regatta.
Despite this, Windsor never looked like losing, winning by three lengths in 6.27, smashing the Fawley record by three seconds.
