Slough Town’s joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood have said they see ‘many positives’ coming from a new link with Academy23.
The Rebels plan to launch a new u23s squad next season after linking up with the football academy, run by former Windsor and Burnham player Ashley Smith. It is hoped the new partnership will offer players a genuine route from youth to senior level football. The training programme enables them to continue undergraduate or post graduate studies at Bucks New University with playing football.
Speaking about the partnership, Baker said: “We see many positives from this partnership and are excited to see how it develops.
“We know Ashley (Smith) well and already have a very good relationship with him.
“Academy23 held a showcase event in 2018 which allowed us to identify Dan Roberts, who has been a real plus since signing for us. Along with his coaching team, Ashley will provide a great environment for these young lads to develop. We typically run with a smaller squad than most sides in our league and with the financial challenges that all clubs will face next season, this will not change. This partnership gives us an opportunity to tap into the young talent that Ashley has identified, and for those lads doing well in that group there could be an opportunity to get a taste of senior non-league football with us.”
The Slough Town u23s team will compete against other National League u23s sides, with additional matches against professional opponents. Identifying players for the new squad has already begun, led by Academy23 director Smith.
He said: “The partnership is extremely exciting and will present an unrivalled platform with an elite professional environment.
“Our aim is to identify players who can progress into the first team squad.”
