Hockey round-up: Maidenhead Men's 1sts to host struggling Richmond in first game of the new year

Maidenhead Men's 1sts

Maidenhead Men’s 1sts concluded the first half of their campaign with a 5-2 defeat to Southgate 2nds, but should be confident of getting a win under their belts in their first match of 2020 with bottom club Richmond 2nds the visitors to Altwood School on Saturday.

Chris Brown’s side are currently 10th in MBBO Division 2 West, and far from certain of avoiding the drop come the end of the campaign.

However, results have improved for the side after a shaky start. In their final game of 2019 Maids managed to bag a couple of goals through Matthew Heller – his sixth of the season – and Tom Marriott.

But Southgate are one of a clutch of sides competing for promotion and they comfortably swept Maidenhead aside with goals from Simeon Bird (two), Hugo Borren, Max Garner and Robert Shearer.

The side have had a lengthy Christmas and New Year break, with that Southgate defeat played on December 7, so they’ll be itching to get back to competitive action against a side that’s won just once all season and props up the division on three points.

Unfortunately for Maids that one Richmond victory came against them back in September, a 2-1 defeat on the opening day of the campaign. Callum Turner was on target for Maids that day, but Mark Antrobus and Jeroen Sibia replied for the home side.

Maidenhead Women's 1sts

A fine run of form in the back end of 2019 saw Maidenhead Women’s 1sts rise off the bottom of the South Women’s Hockey League Division 1 table to eighth place, with the side set to return to action at home to London Wayfarers 1sts on January 25.

An encouraging three-game winning streak was ended in their final match of 2019, a 3-0 loss to Guildford 1sts on December 7.

With the coaching support of Team GB’s Shona McCallin and Phil Roper from the sidelines there are positive signs for the teams heading into the new year.

Marlow Men's 1sts

Marlow Men’s 1sts remain very much in the MBBO Regional 1 promotion mix heading into their first match of the new year at Witney 1sts on Saturday. They rounded off 2019 with a six-game unbeaten run, capped off by a 3-2 win at Ashford on December 7.

Slough Women

Slough Hockey Club’s women picked up a couple of wins from the first weekend of the Jaffa Super 6s Indoor Championships in Telford, but they’re already some way behind East Grinstead and Bowdon Hightown who are yet to taste defeat.

Slough are not yet completely out of the title picture, after comprehensively beating Surbiton 6-1 and Clifton Robinsons 4-1.

However, they lost narrowly to leaders East Grinstead, going down 2-1, while Sutton Coldfield also got the better of the Pink and Blacks.

The results leave them in fifth place with six points to their name, six behind both East Grinstead and Bowdon in first and second place.

Sophie Bray is the competition’s leading scorer so far with eight goals to her name for East Grinstead.

The sides will return to conclude the Super 6s indoor action in Telford this weekend.
