Royals must be up for a scrappy affair, says Windsor RFC head coach Jack Pattinson

Windsor head coach Jack Pattinson expects his players will be up for a scrap in the mud when they host fifth placed Chippenham at Home Park tomorrow (Saturday).

He admits the Royals weren’t at the races on Saturday when they were overcome 33-31 by Salisbury. The game might have looked close on the scoreboard but Pattinson conceded the home side should have been out of sight a lot earlier as his players struggled to get into the game.

Now he’s hoping they’ll make amends by putting Chippenham to the sword in tomorrow’s crunch clash.

“Just physically we weren’t at the races from the start on Saturday,” said Pattinson.

“We weren’t up for a scrap at all and Salisbury took advantage of that. We were always on the back foot and it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes where we started to come alive. We left ourselves with way too much work to do.

“Overall, the scoreline was flattering because they completely outworked and outplayed us.

“I wasn’t quite sure how we came away with two losing bonus points because it was a bad day for us.

“We play Chippenham at home this weekend and that’ll be a really tough game,” added Pattinson.

“Salisbury pushed us over because we weren’t on it and in this league you’ve got to be physically up for it. I had some conversations with the boys after the game on Saturday, and they absolutely know they’ve got to be physically on it this weekend if we want to come away with a result.

“There’s no way Chippenham are going to turn up and let us defend the way we did against Salisbury and come away with a win.

“We’ve got to be ready to get stuck in and up for a scrap. If we’re too nice then they’ll completely take us apart.”
