Chilterns League round-up: Second-placed Braywood make it five wins in a row

Braywood CC remain rooted in second place in the Chilterns League Championship after Saturday’s 59-run victory over Great Kingshill CC.

Braywood won the toss and elected to bat, with Obi Sarwar (114no), Faisal Malik (63no), and Nasir Mehmood (41) getting the visitors off to an exceptional start with impressive knocks.

The trio, plus Shiny Johnston (27) and Syed Kazmi (13), were the only batsmen necessary to take to the crease for Braywood as they managed an impressive 266-3 from 45 overs.

And the visitors were just as terrific with the ball in the second innings, with several wickets taken by Prijith Vijayan (3-28), Malik (2-40) and Johnston (2-47), restricting Kingshill to 207 all out in 43.2 overs.

The victory is Braywood’s fifth in a row, a concerning stat for this weekend’s opponents, Shinfield CC.

Littlewick Green CC stunned third-placed Ley Hill CC on Saturday with a 25-run win away from home.

The result could prove to be vital for Green’s Championship survival hopes as they now sit 22 points above bottom Ballinger Waggoners CC, and 18 above Shinfield.

Having been inserted after losing the toss, Green knocked 238-9 in 45 overs. Christie Green (118) top scored with over a century – 14 fours and four sixes – after the visitors’ first two batsmen were dismissed without a run to their names.

Ley Hill came close in their reply, thanks to Jon Lown (28), Callum Wilson (41), and Lewis Thompson’s (46) impressive knocks in the top order. However, partnerships were broken down and nullified largely due to Junaid Akhtar’s haul of 6-44. The hosts were bowled all out for 213 in the 43rd over.

A confident Littlewick Green will face Ballinger Waggoners this weekend.

In Chilterns Division 1, Little Marlow CC were defeated by 11 runs to Winchmore Hill CC Penn on Saturday.

Having elected to field upon winning the toss, Marlow struggled to suppress Hill’s top order as captain Stuart Banham (25) and Hari Krishan (30) picked up over half a century of runs between them.

Chris Edwards (28) Pierre Van Den Berg (35) were next to knock impressive figures, but both players were eventually dismissed by Marlow’s Umar Islam (2-33). At the end of the first innings, Hill had managed 199-9 from 47 overs.

In reply, Marlow got off to an optimistic start with Islam (32) and Anwar Mahmood (46) displaying the visitors’ intentions early on. Arfan Sharif (33) and Tahir Rashid (50) kept the ball rolling with impressive knocks next.

However, Chris Edwards’ (3-32) bowling managed to slow the pace and prevent Marlow from reaching their target. They were bowled out for 188 in the 41st over.

Little Marlow will host Braywood CC 2nds on Saturday.

Sitting a place above in Division 1, fifth-placed Holyport CC drew with Harpsden CC 2nds at the weekend.

Batting first, Holyport managed an impressive 221-5 dec from 45 overs thanks to middle order batsmen Aysin Khan (65) and Ghulam Mirza (56).

Harpsden responded strongly with Duncan Verry (54), Mrinal Madina (56), and skipper Will Stevens (53no) striking impressive runs, contributing to a total of 219-6 from 45 overs.

Holyport will hope to get back on winning ways against Littlewick Green 2nds CC this Saturday.
