Euro 2016: Familiar faces make their predictions for the tournament

Staff reporters

Roy’s boys have crossed the channel and kicked off their Euro 2016 campaign with a frustrating 1-1 draw with Russia. A nation expects but which country will be crying out ‘C’est super!’ as the last men standing? We asked a few familiar faces to make their predictions.

Mick Woodham, Windsor FC manager:

Who will lift the trophy? Belgium

Top goalscorer? Eden Hazard, Belgium

Can England put an end to 50 years of hurt? Not a chance. Tournament football is completely different to the qualifiers.

What’s the best thing about major tournaments? When you get out of the group’s it’s do or die. I love the competitiveness of it.

Cllr Jack Rankin, (Castle Without, Con):

Who will lift the trophy? England

Top goalscorer? Gareth Bale, Wales

Can England put an end to 50 years of hurt? Yes

What’s the best thing about major tournaments? Another reason to get to the pub.

Jon Underwood, Slough Town joint-manager

Who will lift the trophy? Germany

Top goalscorer? Thomas Muller, Germany

Can England put an end to 50 years of hurt? As much as I want us to I just don’t think we’re good enough defensively.

What’s the best thing about major tournaments? I love it when fans from all the different clubs get behind England.

Hamzah Ahmed, Slough’s youth parliament member:

Who will lift the trophy? Germany or Spain

Top goalscorer? Thomas Muller, Germany

Can England put an end to 50 years of hurt? Probably not, I wish they could.

What’s the best thing about major tournaments? The best thing about international sport is it brings countries from across the globe together.
