Staff from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council joined soldiers in moving furniture from a house as fire raged through Park Street yesterday - making five separate trips to get it safely to nearby Victoria Barracks.
The team also organised the closure of Park Street and Sheet Street as far as the Guildhall and the barracks, while the authority's building control staff arranged for safety fencing to be installed.
The borough did not need to find emergency accommodation for people driven from their homes, who made their own arrangements.
This morning the council team was assessing damage and liaising with insurance companies to ensure necessary salvage work was carried out.
Park Street is likely to remain closed today and tomorrow. Today's guard change was cancelled.
The building control team will be on site most of the day and are liaising with the owner of the affected property and contractors to make the area safe, as potentially strong winds remain forecast for tomorrow.
