Ryan Upward sees red as Maidenhead United go down to defeat at Wrexham

Wrexham 2, Maidenhead United 0

Ryan Upward was red carded as Maidenhead United went down to a 2-0 defeat at promotion chasing Wrexham this afternoon.

The Magpies three game unbeaten run came to an end at the Racecourse Ground, but can take credit for the fact that they were never outplayed by Dean Keates’ Dragons.

Wrexham took the lead with their first real chance of note in the 19th minute. Rene Steer lost a key 50/50 challenge which led to Chris Holroyd smashing the ball home after he was played through on goal.

Wrexham had conceded just three second half goals this season so it was imperative the Magpies got back on terms before the interval, and they had their chances. Harold Odametey drilled a shot wide from distance and Christian Smith headed wide from a corner in the 36th minute. But Wrexham received a huge let off midway through the half when Jake Hyde latched onto an underhit back pass but put the ball wide.

Another big chance fell the Magpies way when Odametey was denied from close range by an excellent Jennings block in the 46th minute, while Hyde flicked a header over the bar minutes later. Hyde had another chance, with a shot that bounced wide of the post in the 59th minute. But the game swung Wrexham’s way just a minute later when Upward was given his marching orders for a high challenge.

James Jennings then burst into the Magpies box and drilled the ball past Carl Pentney to confirm the points for the Welsh side.
