Call for 100 birthday cards for 100-year-old Royal Navy veteran

Ted Richardson

St Mark’s Care Home is calling on the Maidenhead community to band together and send 100 cards to celebrate a beloved resident’s 100th birthday.

Ted Richardson will turn one hundred on February 24 – and the Bupa care home where he lives is organising a special celebration to mark this milestone.

The event will include a bagpiper performing for Ted, his family and his fellow residents – honouring his history as a piper in the Royal Navy.

Born in Kenley, Surrey, Ted was the eldest of three children and left school at 14 to begin work.

He sold newspapers at Purley Station, worked at a local ice rink, and later became a projectionist at the local cinema.

At just 15 years old, in 1941, he moved to London, lodging with a family in Battersea while working making musical instruments.

Ted learned to play the bagpipes through the Boys’ Brigade and joined the Scots Guards as a piper at 17. He lived through World War II and spent several years stationed in Germany.

After the war, Ted met his wife Doris, and the couple made their home in Windsor. Ted later joined the Royal Navy, having missed army recruitment.

His naval career allowed him to travel extensively, including service during the Korean War. He completed his service as a petty officer aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.

After seven years, he retired from the Navy, later spending 25 years working for ICI Paints Division in Slough.

Reflecting on his life, Ted said: “You’ve got to take the good with the bad. Do good and it will come back to you and then get on with it.”

Throughout his life, Ted has enjoyed many hobbies, including squash, badminton, reading, gardening, and jogging. He has a daughter, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

Hazel Corrigan, home manager at St Mark’s, said: “Ted is a wonderful resident and very passionate about a wide range of hobbies.

“We love hearing his fascinating stories from such a diverse career and his travels.

“We’re hoping the community will help us celebrate Ted’s 100th birthday by sending 100 cards to mark his long and remarkable life.”

At his birthday celebration, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant will also attend to present Ted with a birthday card from the King.

Anyone wishing to send Ted a birthday card can do so at: St Mark’s Bupa Care Home, 110 St Mark’s Road, Maidenhead, SL6 6DN.
