Enhanced security measures, including temporary airspace restrictions and road closures, will be in place in Windsor next week as the town prepares to host the Nigerian President’s state visit.
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, will visit the UK from Wednesday, March 18, to Thursday, March 19, at the invitation of King Charles III to Windsor Castle.
Thames Valley Police said extensive security planning is underway, with a visible police presence expected across Windsor in the days leading up to and during the visit.
The force is being supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the air restrictions.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall, from the joint operations unit, said the airspace restrictions were part of a ‘robust security operation’ with many measures residents will and will not see.
“As a force, we have a vast amount of experience in policing royal events in Windsor and significant planning and preparation have gone into this event,” he added.
“We will ensure everyone attending the state visit, including dignitaries and spectators, as well as the public, is kept safe to enjoy the historic occasion.
“There is a permanent airspace restriction around Windsor Castle 365 days a year.
“On Wednesday, March 18, this will be extended to provide enhanced security measures. It will be in place from 7am to 11.59pm, in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority.”
The restrictions mean anyone breaching them is committing a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could face prosecution.
Police said officers with specialist capabilities – including mounted units, search teams, roads policing and armed officers – will be deployed, supported by neighbourhood teams and Project Servator patrols.
Extensive CCTV monitoring and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers will also be used to make sure the event runs safely.
Several road closures and parking restrictions will be in place from Tuesday, March 17, as preparations begin, with further temporary closures possible during the visit.
Visitors are advised to use public transport where possible to avoid disruption as roads are expected to close between 9am and 3pm on March 17 and 18.
This includes parts of the B470 such as River Street, Thames Avenue, Datchet Road and Windsor Road, along with Barry Avenue between 9am and 1pm, and Castle Hill, Thames Street, the High Street, Park Street, Sheet Street and St Alban’s Street.
Some footways and crossings in the town centre may also be closed periodically between 9.30am and 12.30pm to allow the ceremonial procession to pass safely.
Four Windsor car parks – Home Park, King Edward VII Avenue, River Street and Romney – will be closed from 7am to 5pm on both days. Other car parks will remain open.
Season ticket holders whose usual parking place is closed during the state visit should park in Alexandra Gardens or Alma Road car park.
The Royal Borough said it is working with Thames Valley Police, the Royal Household and partners to minimise disruption for residents, businesses and visitors.
Despite the road closures and security arrangements, officials said Windsor and Eton’s shops, cafés and restaurants will remain open as usual.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
