The headquarters of a scout group in Windsor is to undergo expansion after it was awarded a £24,000 grant by a trust that supports community projects in the UK.
The 5th Windsor (Dedworth) Scouts received the funding from The Veolia Environmental Trust and will now be able to extend its scout hut in Wolf Lane.
Facilities for scout members with disabilities and new storage space will be part of the new extension, as well as installing eco-friendly insulation.
An additional room will also be built to allow overnight camps for boys and girls and a breakout room for those with special needs.
The trust initially rejected the group's application for a grant last year.
But after receiving another application they decided to award the grant at a board meeting held on Monday, March 23.
Grants are awarded through The Landfill Communities Fund which has seen more than £967,000 handed out to 32 projects in Berkshire since 1998.
The 5th Windsor (Dedworth) Scouts runs several weekly groups at its headquarters for children between the ages of six and 16.
Alison Mandritis, fundraiser for the 5th Windsor (Dedworth) Scouts, said: “It was just such a relief.
“This group has been underfunded for so many years and the leaders are so dedicated.
“They've got a real open-armed policy which means everyone is welcome.
“This money will allow the group to build additional rooms for children to use if the group activities are too much.”
Alison added that the building had been virtually untouched since its construction in the 1950s and was long overdue an extension.
Paul Taylor, executive director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, said: “We are pleased to be helping the scouts make this project happen and I look forward to seeing it start.”
Alison said the scout group is eager to start work on the extension as soon as possible.
