Film review: Blade Runner 2049

Fred Campbell

Fred Campbell

The original Blade Runner came out in 1982 and cost about $20 million.

It divided critics but it became a classic — it was even recently voted in the top ten of teachers’ favourite films.

It was set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, a film noir detective thriller with Harrison Ford, in the lead role, hunting down rogue replicants who are raging against the end of their life span.

The sequel has many links with the original, including Ridley Scott as executive producer.

It is visually stunning with some outstanding special effects and locations in Nevada, Mexico, Spain and Iceland.

The complexity of themes is continued from the original and there are some distinctly bleak aspects to urban life in California in 2049.

There are strong performances, especially from the female cast members, and Harrison Ford fans will not be disappointed.

The challenge with this movie is the length — two and a half hours.

I give it a 7 out of 10.
