Work to build a new multi-use hall at a secondary school in Wargrave is underway.
Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) is working with numerous schools, including The Piggott CofE School, to provide more secondary school places.
The expansion is part of a phased initiative to allow an additional 230 students, with improved sixth form facilities.
Piggott has been contributing to the borough’s secondary school sufficiency since 2022.
The new building features a main hall and a dining area as well as a dedicated working space and staff office.
The work is currently proceeding to schedule.
The shell and roof of the new hall are already built, and the building is now watertight.
Underfloor heating, the installation of doors and windows and screeding the floor has already been completed.
The internal works will now begin and include the construction of new internal walls, the initial first fix, mechanical and data wiring and internal lining of external walls.
The contractors for the project are Wokingham-based company Contract Trading Services Ltd.
The hall is the last part of the project which as spanned three phases.
This includes making alterations to the science department and a lab extension, which was completed in October 2024.
Four flood-lit all-weather tennis/netball courts were completed in spring 2025.
The multi-purpose hall is expected to be completed by December this year.
Cllr Prue Bray, executive member for children’s services at WBC, said: "I am delighted work is progressing at The Piggott School.
“The new main hall and dining area will provide more space for pupils, which will help provide more secondary places across the borough.
“We want to ensure each child in our borough has access to education by providing fair opportunities for everyone which is why the council continues to invest in school facilities.”
Derren Gray, chief executive officer for Agape Multi-Academy Trust, said: “The Piggott School continues its commitment to working with the local authority to meet the local community’s need for places at the school in current and future years, and welcomes this investment in the school estate.”
