1980: Members of Maidenhead Rotaract managed to smash their £1,000 fundraising target – despite a group of youths bringing a marathon disco to a premature end.
Rotaract members were aiming to keep dancing for 12 hours at the Thames Riviera (main picture), but a group of troublemakers stormed the dancefloor just 10 minutes before the target time.
Despite this, the group managed to exceed their charity target by £400.
1985: Top swimmer David Wilkie made a splash with pupils at Highfield PNEU School.
The Olympic gold medallist visited the Castle Hill school to say thank you to the pupils for fundraising towards the English team’s training for the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
1990: Sheephouse Farm once again provided the ideal setting for Thames Valley Adventure Playground’s popular raft races.
The major fundraising event attracted hundreds of people, with the main race won by Bristol Ready Mix Carvin, while the St Regis Plate was won by Summerleaze.
1995: The Thames reach from Bisham to Marlow churned in the wake of hundreds of rowers competing at Marlow Regatta.
For 12 hours crews from the town battled against athletes from as far afield as America in 131 races.
On the banks the beer tents were packed out with revellers trying to escape the rain, and Higginson Park became speckled with huge umbrellas.
2000: Traders and motorists were celebrating after news that Cookham Bridge would finally reopen after months of strengthening and refurbishment work.
High Street traders said the bridge closure in January that year had hit them in the pocket and left them isolated.
They were angered further by two delays to the work, which was originally due to be completed in May of that year.
