1980: Marlow Rowing Club’s Andrew Justice returned from Moscow with an Olympic silver medal as a member of the British eight crew.
The Games were subject to a boycott by some Western nations, but this had a minimal effect on Andrew’s event, with few major rowing nations absent.
Race walker Ian Richards (pictured), from Maidenhead, also competed. He missed out on a medal but finished on a day when the heat and humidity destroyed half the field.
1980: Regulars at the Oak and Saw pub in Taplow clubbed together to buy regular Ernie Price a new car when they heard his old Morris 1100 was soon to come off the road.
Friends of Ernie, who had been going to the pub for more than 30 years, organised a secret collection of money and raised £200.
1995: A carnival atmosphere filled Maidenhead town centre as shoppers celebrated the completion of phase one of a £2.5million civic revamp scheme.
Free parking was on offer and entertainment included stilt-walkers, clowns, violinists, jugglers and music provided by Star 106.6FM.
1995: A new fancy dress and party shop, Song and Supper, opened in St Mark’s Crescent. Themed outfits
were available to hire including medieval, Wild West, nuns and pirate costumes.
The shop was set up by corporate theme events company Best Events.
2000: Maidenhead topped the ground force league after scooping the regional large town Country in Bloom title.
The town was a winner in the prestigious Thames and Chilterns Country in Bloom competition, having planned its floral displays since March.
Martin Quantock, town centre manager, said: “It is fantastic news for Maidenhead and proves it really is a good place to visit. Everything went perfectly and the whole ambience of the town was just right.”
2000: Cricket fans and autograph hunters converged at Bray cricket club for one of the highlights of the sport’s social calendar.
The annual Celebrity Cricket Match boasted a fine array of stars, rallied to join the fun by club president and long-time cricket devotee, Michael Parkinson.
The stars included Chris Tarrant, Carol Vorderman, Kevin Whately and Sheila Ferguson.
2000: Model makers from Legoland helped children at a summer school at Maidenhead Synagogue build a model of Herod’s Temple.
The end result was a replica which was so professional it was to be kept on permanent display.
Meanwhile, older children built a replica of the temple in the synagogue garden, using hardboard and wood for the project.
