1978: It was drinks all round for Maidenhead’s firefighters and the soldiers who maintained the town’s fire cover during the
national firefighter strike (main photo).

They all met in the fire station social club for a tipple as the soldiers prepared to move out.

The firefighters were reporting back to work after nine weeks on strike.

Both services expressed their gratitude to the public for their support during the strike.

1983: Some 50 youngsters from the Marlow Boys Football Club had the chance to pick up a few professional tips when they travelled to see Luton play at home to Tottenham.

The boys had the chance to meet some of the players in the clubhouse afterwards.

1993: TV star Tim Brooke-Taylor joined the Mayor, Cllr Tony Langdown, and his wife, Rosemary, to plant the first of more than 800 trees at Cox Green School.

Dozens of volunteers, helped by staff and pupils at the school, spent almost five hours planting the trees.

1998: Parents of children at Oldfield Primary School were campaigning to install a pedestrian crossing in Bray Road.

“After 25 years of the school being in existence, I cannot believe that one has not been put there before, especially as the road was refurbished at length last year,” said parent Jane Harris.

The county council said proposals for a new crossing would go before a highways panel later in the year.

1998: Boots, in the High Street, was the latest winner of the town’s prestigious Service Excellence Award.

The award scheme allowed satisfied customers to nominate a business in Maidenhead where they felt they had enjoyed a particularly high degree of service.

1998: Talented young swimmers from the Maidenhead Marlins had their achievements recognised at a special presentation evening.

Female club champion was Lucy Thompson, while Anthony Christodoulou took the title for the boys.

Stephanie Rich, Camila Bonfield and James Brunton also received awards, which were handed out by Advertiser editor Martin Trepte.
