Husband's tribute to 'caring and special' town personality

Tributes have been paid to a ‘caring and special’ woman who became a popular figure on the buses around Maidenhead as well as a familiar face in the Nicholsons Centre.

Susan Procter, of Suffolk Road, Larchfield, was well known for her kind and friendly demeanour when she travelled around the town on the bus.

Husband Jason recalled how she loved meeting new people and speaking to those who seemed down.

He said: “She used to spend a lot of time on the buses with the drivers. She used to ride round, get to know people. If someone was lonely on the bus, she used to always go that extra mile to talk to them and make them feel welcome.”

Susan moved to Maidenhead from Nelson, Lancashire, back in 2007 after meeting her future husband, Jason, online.

The pair tied the knot at Maidenhead Registry Office the following year and went on to enjoy just shy of 18 years of happy marriage.

Susan took a job as a cleaner at the Nicholsons Centre in 2015 and became a friendly face around the shopping complex for a number of years – before leaving when the COVID pandemic hit.

The selfless resident also held huge affection for the Salvation Army and spent a number of years supporting the charity’s work in Slough.

She would often volunteer to collect for the charity in Slough, Taplow and Windsor.

Husband Jason said the support his wife gave him throughout their relationship was invaluable.

Jason, who delivers post in Oldfield Road for the Royal Mail, said his wife would meet him during his routes to find out if he was doing OK.

“She was always understanding, caring, special,” Jason said.

“She would always check up on me if I was out on deliveries. She used to come out and get me a drink every day.”

Susan’s health started to deteriorate in 2024 due to a heart condition.

In the early hours of January 4, Jason recalls waking up but his partner told him to go back to sleep.

Susan had been watching one of her favourite shows, On the Buses, in bed but when Jason woke up a few hours later, she was unresponsive.

Her death was confirmed that morning at the age of 50.

Jason thanked the support of the Royal Mail as well as residents on his Oldfield Road route who have raised more than £400 to support him during this difficult time. He is also planning to sponsor a race in Susan’s name at Windsor Racecourse, where the pair enjoyed many regular outings.

The Susan Procter Memorial is expected to be held at a race meeting on August 13.

A celebration of life is also planned at the Toby Carvery, near Braywick Park, on March 7.

Jason added: “We both loved each other so much. I’ve been with her 19 years and she was an amazing lady. I’m so happy she chose to be my wife.”
