Review: Jack and the Beanstalk at Desborough Theatre

Playing to a packed house of excited cub and scout groups from the Maidenhead area, Maidenhead Drama Guild's 2016 production of Jack and the Beanstalk certainly was an energetic affair.

From Dame Trott, Robin Lovell to Dozy Den, Patrick Ashe, who gave the most physically demanding performance of the evening, to the deliciously evil Poison Ivy, Samantha Partridge - each of the principal cast members worked their socks off to ensure the audience was fully engaged and participating in the proceedings.

The classic tale of Jack's progression from idle boy to superhero is skilfully played by thigh slapping Kirstie Bradbrook-Armit, ably supported by the sweet and beautiful Princess Rose Charlotte Frate.

The comic double act of the dithering King and his 'jack of all trades' Prime Pinister, Graham Howarth and Fiona Mottershaw respectively, were endlessly silly and hugely entertaining throughout.

Punctuated by several musical and dance numbers over the course of the evening, the ensemble cast demonstrated their many talents with intricate dance sequences, choreographed by the aptly named Victoria Dance. The dream sequence staged by the Tinsel Team Dancers was extremely graceful from such a young group.

The greatly anticipated appearance of Giant Blunderbore was one of the highlights of the evening. He towered over the proceedings creating an air of danger and menace which all good pantomimes must produce. He was played by Rob Harris (the body) and the deep resonate voice of Drew Thomas, the perfect sound for a giant!

Not forgetting Buttercup, another scene-stealer who without saying a word trotted through the evening with co-ordination and great poise.

With four more days to run, get your ticket for this most entertaining evening. You'd better hurry before it's too late...oh yes you do!

Jack and the Beanstalk will run at the Desborough Theatre in Maidenhead Town Hall until Sunday, December 18. Visit www.desboroughtheatre.co.uk for information.
