Burnham are back on top of the Combined Counties Premier Division North after Shyon Dennis’s classy finish earned the Blues a 1-0 win over Abingdon United at the 1878 Stadium.

The Blues took the lead on the stroke of half-time when the hosts managed to play the ball through for Dennis who kept his composure to take the ball around the Abingdon keeper before sweeping home right footed.

Because of a kit clash with their visitors, the hosts played in their red away strip, but the result was just the same as it has been in the league this season with Omz and Mo Bakali’s team claiming their sixth straight victory.

Burnham should really have added to their advantage, even though they weren’t quite at their fluent best after the interval, but their defence stayed switched on and resilient to ensure they came away with another important three points.

With their closest rivals Broadfields United and Windsor & Eton FC playing out a 1-1 draw at Tithe Farm Sports & Social Club, the Blues move two points clear at the top of the table - and they now have at least one or two games in hand over most of their rivals.

Six wins from six to start the league is beyond most fans’ wildest dreams, but the Blues have pretty wild dreams this season and have made a very solid start in their attempts to achieve those dreams.

Fifty-nine fans saw Burnham’s win on Saturday, but those crowds will surely grow if they continue producing performances and results like this.

Speaking to club director, Paul Butler after the final whistle, Shyon Dennis said: “The first half was really good. We were creating lots of chances as a team. For my goal there was good build up play and I took it around the keeper. I felt I took the goal comfortably and was composed.

“Second half we kind of dropped off but all in all, good win, good result and we kept a clean sheet.”

Teammate Yahaya Kamara added: “I feel like from day one it’s been amazing to be fair. The boys have welcomed me into the squad. I have a good relationship with the gaffers. We’re top of the league and there’s not much more to say, other than what I’ve said to the boys in the changing room. Every game is going to feel like a cup final and it’s going to be up to us to get up for every single match. Good teams manage to get the wins even when they’re not at their best, so I’m just happy. Let’s take it game by game and make sure we turn up next week.”

The Blues are back in action on Wednesday evening when they make the trip to play eighth place Hilltop.

Matty Angell’s Windsor & Eton have slipped to fifth in the table despite scoring a late goal with only 10 men in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with second placed Broadfields United.

The hosts went into the game on top of the table, and they looked like they might have enough about them to stay there when David Levy (45+2') fired them in front just before the half-time break.

That’s the way things remained until the 87th minute when Ethan Darcy found the back of the net for the visitors, who then held on to maintain their own impressive start to the season.

Windsor’s Ross McKernan was sent off just before the hour mark, but Angell’s side still managed to grind out a result when it looked like events were conspiring against them.

Holyport’s up and down start to the season has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks with Port losing their fourth straight game on Saturday with a 3-1 reverse at Harefield United.

Playing their second away game in the space of a few days, Port were largely second best at Preston Park and were 3-0 down before Philip Oladunjoye (87') netted a late consolation.

First half goals from Max McLeish (26') (45’+4) and Aiden Swaby (36') had put the home side into a commanding lead.

The result was Holyport’s third league defeat in a row and leaves Lee Ovens and Dan Rapley’s side looking nervously over their shoulders in 15th place.

They face another tough looking game in the first round of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup at home to Thatcham Town on Tuesday (September 9, 7.45pm kick-off) before hosting 18th placed North Leigh at Summerleaze Park on Saturday in what looks like a decent opportunity to pick up much-needed points and a bit of morale.
