A property investment company has revealed it is progressing redevelopment plans after acquiring the former Haleon site in Maidenhead for an undisclosed sum.

Firethorn said it is anticipating to invest £70million into the re-development of the 9.3-acre logistics site.

The company said an industrial development is planned at the site but has not given any further details.

Firethorn purchased the long-standing site from the global consumer health company Haleon, which closed down production at the Norreys Drive facility in October.

In April last year, Haleon revealed that it was to close its Maidenhead site and transfer operations to its main oral health manufacturing hub in Levice, Slovakia.

The facility has been in operation for more than 60 years, after it was bought into by precursor companies in the late 1950s.

The site has a long history under companies such as Smithkline Beecham, GSK and others.

In a statement, Firethorn said that while the proposals are ‘still at an early stage’, the project has the potential to create up to 530 new jobs, subject to final usage.

There would also be 40 to 60 on-site jobs during the peak construction phase, the company explained.

The statement added: “As part of the redevelopment, Firethorn will support apprenticeship programmes and intends to work closely with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Employment & Skills Hub to maximise training, skills development and employment opportunities for local people.

“Firethorn looks forward to engaging with the Local Planning Authority, local residents and community stakeholders as plans evolve, with a focus on bringing the site back into active use through the delivery of a modern, best-in-class development that supports the local economy.”

James Sanders, head of industrial and logistics at Firethorn, said: “This acquisition represents a long-term investment in Maidenhead and is reflective of our strong commitment to the logistics sector, as we continue to expand our portfolio in prime locations across the UK."

A spokesperson for Haleon Great Britain and Ireland, said: “We can confirm that we have exchanged and completed on the site with Firethorn.”
