Residents across the Royal Borough and Slough will be gathering to celebrate Eid al-Adha this week.
Eid al-Adha is the second most important date in the Islamic calendar, following Eid al-Fitr, which took place in March this year.
The celebration marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca and the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim.
With festivities starting soon, here are some of the events taking place across the Maidenhead, Windsor and Slough areas.
MAIDENHEAD
Maidenhead Mosque is once again expecting a ‘record attendance’ as it welcomes worshippers from across the Royal Borough and beyond to its annual Eid al-Adha celebrations on Friday.
The day will bring people of all ages and backgrounds together ‘in the spirit of reflection, friendship, and community celebration’, Zia Mahiudin, a trustee of the mosque said.
The event will start with a sermon focusing on the theme of sacrifice, which is a ‘central element of Eid al-Adha’.
Zia said: “[This] commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice in obedience to God but also relates [to] how we can sacrifice through service to others and compassion within society.
“Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice isn’t just about giving something up; it’s about giving back.”
He added that more than 2,000 people are expected over the course of four prayer sittings during the day.
Following the prayer and sermon, guests will celebrate together at the mosque.
Volunteers will serve an array of refreshments including snacks, mithai, karak chai, and chocolates.
After the festivities have concluded, Zia explained that ‘many attendees’ will go onto Braywick cemetery to pay their respects to loved ones who have passed away.
He added: “Maidenhead Mosque has long been a cornerstone of the local Muslim community, but its doors remain open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, particularly during key religious and cultural events.”
More than 2,000 people are expected to join the Al-Tawheed Islamic Education Centre Maidenhead’s (TIECM) Eid in the Park celebrations at Kidwells Park on Friday.
Entry to the event will open at 8am, with a large congregational prayer set to take place at 9am, followed by a sermon.
Guests will enjoy free ice cream and refreshments, and bouncy castles will also be available.
Irfan Rafiq, event director at TIECM, said: “Eid is such a special time for our community — a chance to come together in prayer, reflection, and celebration.
“My hope for this year’s outdoor Eid prayer is that it brings people from all walks of life together in unity and joy, and that we can all carry that spirit of compassion and togetherness well beyond the day itself.”
WINDSOR
A host of festivities have been planned by the Windsor Muslim Association (WMA) as they celebrate Eid al-Adha this week.
The association’s Eid in Windsor Park will start with a prayer at 9am, which will be followed by a sermon.
The event will be hosted in Dedworth Manor Park and will feature plenty of fun for attendees.
This includes ice cream, fairground rides, donkey rides and a bouncy castle.
Guests are asked to bring their own prayer mat, and free parking will be available.
SLOUGH
Plenty of food and drink is promised as guests gather to celebrate at Eid al-Adha in the Park in Slough on Friday.
An Eid prayer will take place from 8am in the Elite Banqueting Suite at The Park in Wexham Road.
The celebration will also see guests treated to a continental breakfast, ice cream, tea, karak chai and more.
Youngsters will enjoy a bouncy castle and goodie bags.
The Ujala Foundation will be celebrating the occasion with an Eid in the Park event in Manor Park Field in Slough.
The event will kick off at 9am, with an Eid prayer taking place at 10am.
Guests will also enjoy a free bouncy castle and free ice cream.
Attendees are asked to bring their own prayer mat and shoe bag.
