Adepoju double seals FA Cup win over Bedfont Sports after early red card drama.

Bedfont Sports 1, Slough Town 2

Slough Town rode a roller-coaster into the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday, coming from behind with 10 men to defeat Bedfont Sports on their own patch.

The Rebels hadn’t been in the best of form heading into Saturday’s clash with their Isthmian League South Central Division opponents, having lost back-to-back matches in the league to Torquay United and leaders Hornchurch.

However, they had managed to battle their way past step 3 side Welling United on a replay to set up the weekend’s trip to the Bedfont Sports Club.

In the early stages of Saturday’s match, it looked like everything was going badly wrong, and their hopes of progressing to the final qualifying round were evaporating against their step 4 opponents.

However, they managed to gather themselves and fought back with a brace from new signing Josh Adepoju.

Despite dominating the ball in the early stages of the game, it was hosts Bedfont who took the lead through Ollie Davison in the 18th minute.

Worse was to follow for the visitors in the 25th minute when keeper Adam Desbois was then red carded for denying a goal scoring opportunity outside of the box.

Having given Bedfont a goal and a man advantage, Slough’s hopes of progression looked a lot slimmer. But with reserve goalkeeper Henry Upsetll coming on to replace Jaiden Drakes-Thomas, they managed to give themselves a foothold in the tie once again.

They tried their best to create chances before the break but were thwarted by the Eagles’ defence.

Therefore, the goal which arrived three minutes before half-time was just what the doctor ordered. The Rebels finally found a moment of quality when Scott Davies’s lovely ball over the defensive line allowed Adepoju to nip in front of the Bedfont keeper and head home. The home side’s keeper had been caught a little on his toes, but Adepoju was bright and alert - and brave - as he dashed in to nod the ball home and take a clattering from the keeper.

Wiktor Makowski then had a chance to fire the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time, but the angle was against him, and he pulled his effort just wide.

Buoyed by their goal - and the knowledge they were still competing well with 10 men - they continued to carve out the better chances. Adepoju fed Makowski who fired just over the bar in the 55th minute.

But the visitors grabbed the winner in the 60th minute when an excellent passing move sent Adepoju through on goal and he swept the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net via the post.

Instead of protecting what they had, the Rebels went in search of a third goal, with Makowski coming close with an attempt from distance which very nearly caught out the Eagles’ keeper.

Bedfont threw some balls into the box late on as they chased a leveller to force a replay, but Davies side had enough about them to see the game through with relatively little panic.

Their name will now be in this afternoon’s (Monday) fourth qualifying round draw. It’s the last round before EFL sides enter the competition at the first-round stage.
