REMEMBER WHEN: Ronnie Barker and Morecambe and Wise bring sunshine to Maidenhead

1976: Three of Britain's best loved comedians, Ronnie Barker, Ernie Wise and Eric Morecambe, were horsing around at the Shire Horse Inn at Maidenhead Thicket for a BBC programme press conference.

1986: Agnes Hayward Nursery School was preparing to move out of Burberry Hall in St Mark’s Road, which was set to be demolished.

The building stood next to the Burberry Gospel Hall, the two First World War huts having been erected in about 1920 by Mr Burberry, head of the company which manufactured the famous raincoats.

One hut was to serve as a church and the other a Sunday school.

Prior to the nursery’s use, the buildings had been used by the Methodists, until the later creation of St Mark’s Methodist Church in Allenby Road.

Children from the nursery were accommodated at its other site in Lincoln Road, which is no longer in use.

The gospel hall opened in 1962. This year a planning application has been submitted to the Royal Borough for a replacement church building, with the aim of increasing activity in it.

1986: Options were being weighed up for the redevelopment of Braywick Park.

A £1.2million plan for improved sports facilities submitted earlier in the year was criticised by residents and so the Royal Borough decided to let the public have its say.

New ideas included converting a building in Hibbert Road to be used as an education centre, creating a nine-hole golf course and introducing nature trails and walks.

The site was already in use by WAMDSAD (now SportsAble), Maidenhead Athletic Club, Maidenhead Rugby Club and others.

Thirty years on the site is being considered as a home for a possible new leisure centre, to replace the ageing Magnet, in a development which could cost about £30million.
