Councillors have agreed to support the commissioning of a new drinking fountain in Windsor town centre which would celebrate the achievement Her Late Majesty reaching 70 years on the throne.

At a cabinet meeting last Thursday (December 15), council leader Andrew Johnson explained that the funding that is needed to design and build the fountain will be met by The Windsor Platinum Jubilee Committee.

He explained that the total cost of the scheme is currently set at £261,000.

Cllr Johnson added that the committee has so far raised £224,000 to cover the design, manufacture, and installation of the fountain, which includes funding to cover the maintenance fees for the first three years.

He added that the committee needs support from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) to take on the future responsibility of the fountain once it is installed and provide a contribution towards the final costs on completion.

Cllr Johnson said: “I think it’s fair to say that this fountain will be in a prominent location within the town.

“It will be fully accessible to all. It does align with our commitment to tackling and mitigating climate change and improving the natural environment as it is effectively a clean water drinking fountain, negating the need for hopefully single use plastics.

“And it will also continue as a lasting memorial to the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II.”

Cllr Gurpreet Bhangra (Con, Boyn Hill) seconded the report and added: “The Platinum Jubilee drinking foutain is a wonderful way to mark Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“It’s a sustainable project as it has a drinking fountain for water bottles and it’s accessible for wheelchair users.

“It is an important feature for Windsor and for residents and visiting tourists to enjoy.”

Cllr David Hilton (Con, Ascot & Sunninghill), said: “I think its appropriate that cabinet thanks the Jubilee committee including councillor Samantha Rayner for the work they’ve done to raise what is a very considerable amount of money.”

With a small change the recommendation was agreed by cabinet.
