Slough Town were competitive without being clinical in forward areas in Monday evening’s 2-0 defeat away to Chelmsford City at Melbourne Stadium.

Just 48 hours after hitting the 50-point mark for the season thanks to a brilliant injury-time leveller from Johnny Goddard in a 3-3 draw with Salisbury at Arbour Park, the Rebels were back on the road, and they came up just short against one of the National League South promotion hopefuls.

The visitors had spells when they looked capable of scoring, but the writing looked to be on the wall from the moment Lyle Taylor flicked home a cross from the left acrobatically to put Chelmsford in front in the 63rd minute. The Rebels will be disappointed with the goal from a defensive standpoint, having repeatedly handed possession back to the Clarets in the build-up.

Their second goal followed shortly afterwards and again the Rebels would love to run things back and do it differently. Tyrese Dyce could only half clear a cross into the path of Jason Adigun who steered a low shot beyond Alfie Marriott.

This week’s results leave the Rebels 16th ahead of Saturday’s trip to Farnborough.

Speaking after the final whistle to Cameron McNeish for sloughtownfc.net, Davies said: “I thought the boys were competitive throughout the game. Were we brilliant on the ball, no we weren’t. It was very disjointed in terms of the team we had to pick. They haven’t played together as much as they would have liked.

“But I think it’s important that we reflect on tonight’s game and be positive. We’ve come here and done ok. I wasn’t disgraced by the performance or the result. Anyone who is playing us at the moment is playing a weakened version of us and I don’t think it’s a true reflection of how good we can be.

“But I was super proud of the lads. We had a couple of moments at 0-0 when we could have taken the lead, and we’ve come to Chelmsford who are a superpower in the league right now. They have some unbelievably good players for the level and the moment that undoes us is a great finish from Lyle. But we must look and say, ‘how has he got that much space in the box.”
