Windsor did what they needed to do in Saturday’s home clash with relegation bound Oxford Harlequins 2nds, and in doing so have given themselves hope of finishing out of the bottom two this season.
Andy Symons side eased to a relatively comfortable 27-5-win over their winless and wounded opponents. Quins are now just waiting for the campaign to end so they can be put out of their misery and look to build anew next season.
The result lifts Windsor to within two points of third from bottom London Irish Wild Geese who picked up a losing bonus point from their 22-17 home defeat to third placed Belsize Park.
They pushed their high-flying visitors all the way to the final whistle but failed to land that final score which would surely have ended Windsor’s hopes of catching them.
Windsor have three games left to try and make up those points on the Wild Geese. They visit Grasshoppers on Saturday, March 21, play their final home game against Old Priorians on March 28 and round off a testing Regional 2 Thames campaign with a trip to sixth placed Teddington. All those games will be tough, but they’ve given themselves hope.
Seventh placed Marlow meanwhile could do local rivals Windsor a favour when they host the London Irish Wild Geese at Riverwoods on Saturday week (March 21).
On Saturday, they edged a tight, tense clash away to Harpenden 17-24 to stretch their lead over the eighth placed side to 10 points.
Kev O’Byrne’s side have picked up form of late yet remain seventh in the table. With just two points separating them from fifth placed Aylesbury they may yet finish the season one or two places higher.
On paper they have one more favourable fixture at home to the Wild Geese before rounding off their campaign with a trip to leaders Brunel University before finishing off at Riverwoods against third placed Belsize Park.
