Windsor walkway project to celebrate the Queen's reign steps closer to completion

Almost all of the gunmetal markers which will line the route of the Queen’s Walkway have now been laid in Windsor.

The Outdoor Trust’s project to celebrate the Queen, all being well, becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history later this year has stepped nearer to completion this week as the discs are installed one by one.

A total of 63 markers will form a 6.3km-route around the town, linking its best features. The numbers represent the length of the Queen’s reign, which will surpass Queen Victoria’s record of 63 years and 209 days in September.

The first marker was unveiled outside Windsor Castle in March.

This week the markers have been laid in locations including the Long Walk, Bachelors Acre and The Goswells, by the team from Murrill Construction Ltd, which is supporting the project free of charge.

Speaking on Wednesday, Jim Walker, director of The Outdoor Trust, said the charity was really pleased to have passed the halfway stage, and was thrilled with the public response to the markers being installed.

“It’s really nice that people locally seem to be embracing it,” he added.

By this morning there were less than 10 markers left to be laid, with the last ones expected to be installed on Tuesday morning.

The trust aims to complete the walkway by September 9.
