Holyport lifted themselves out of the Combined Counties Premier Division North relegation zone on Tuesday evening with a fantastic 3-0 home win over Abingdon United.
Concerns were starting to grow for Port’s survival hopes this season after defeats to Virginia Water and British Airways last week left them in the automatic relegation spots, having played more games than their rivals.
But Tuesday’s win at least gives them hope. They’ll likely still need some favours from other sides in the division to keep their noses out of trouble, but they’ve won the second of this crucial run of five straight matches at Summerleaze Park.
They got off to a perfect start on home soil with Zaoui providing the assist for Shaun Heuer to score in only the third minute.
The hosts then turned the game firmly in their favour either side of half time.
Their second was a bit of a worldie from Ramon Rose in first half stoppage time with Childress providing the assist. Wilson then teed up Harry Laflin to make it 3-0 shortly after half-time.
The next of those comes this Saturday when they host bottom of the table Edgware & Kingsbury in what is surely a must-win game for Lee Ovens and Dan Rapley’s side.
They needed to play a lot better than they did in Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to British Airways, and fortunately they did.
On Saturday, Frankie Major gave British Airways lift off in the 18th minute before Tristan Goodridge took the game away from Port with a second goal in the 55th minute. Herman Quaynor’s goal in the 72nd minute killed the game entirely before Harry Laflin’s 80th minute consolation.
The next three home games against Edgware (February 21), Milton United (February 24) and Northwood (February 28) will now surely determine Port’s survival prospects.
They’re now one point above the drop zone but have played four more times than second bottom North Leigh.
North Leigh’s home game with Windsor & Eton on Tuesday was postponed following a pitch inspection.
