The A308 mini-roundabout in Clewer has been the scene of several incidents in recent years
The Royal Borough is consulting on plans to upgrade a ‘dangerous’ junction on the A308 in Clewer.
Residents are being invited to have their say on the proposal, which looks to upgrade a mini roundabout to a new signal-controlled junction to improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme would include new cycle optimised protected signals, referred to as a ‘Cyclops’ junction, on the junction with Mill Lane and Parsonage Lane on the A308.
Campaigners have long called for road safety improvements at the blackspot junction, following several collisions in recent years near the roundabout.
Speaking to the Express back in December 2021, Councillor Amy Tisi (Lib Dem, Clewer East), said: “When I get a message from a resident about the junction, my heart skips a beat because I am convinced that one of these days there will be a fatal accident.
“I can’t live with that on my conscience, and neither should the council. We have got to do something before that happens.”
The Royal Borough says the new design would completely separate those travelling on foot and by bicycle from vehicles, reducing the possibility of collisions or conflict at a junction.
It added it will be easier for pedestrians to get to where they need to be in fewer stages due to shorter crossing times and more space to wait than at most junctions.
A consultation of the proposal has been launched, and residents have until Sunday, February 5 to give their views by visiting https://rbwmtogether.rbwm.gov.uk/cyclops.
There will also be two drop-in sessions for people to find out more, which will be held at The Swan pub in Mill Lane on:
Councillor Phil Haseler, cabinet member for planning, parking, highways and transport, said: “This proposal is part of our commitment to improve highways safety on roads in the borough for pedestrians and cyclists, and promote sustainable travel by creating safer, more user-friendly routes for all.”
The upgrade would be funded from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund and developer contributions.
If it proceeds, work is expected to start in early summer with the work being carried out in four phases.
During each phase of work, the lane under construction – in Mill Lane and Parsonage Lane – would be closed, with traffic flowing in one direction at a time.
Traffic along the A308 will continue to have two-way traffic flow, all controlled by traffic lights.
The consultation can also be viewed on the public-access computers available at all local libraries, where staff are happy to help if needed.
Written comments can be submitted to: FAO: Transport Service Lead, Town Hall, St Ives Road, Maidenhead, SL6 1R.
A hard copy of the consultation, the plans and paper response forms are available upon request at libraries in the borough.
