M4: closure between Maidenhead and Slough due to HGV fire

Drivers are being advised to follow diversion signs due to the closure (Image: Thames Valley Police))

Drivers using the M4 between Slough and Maidenhead have been warned to expect disruption as emergency services battle a fire on a heavy goods vehicle.

The westbound carriageway between Slough (junction 6) and Maidenhead (junction 8/9) is closed with fire crews on scene and National Highways teams helping manage traffic in the area.

Traffic England's website showed delays of more than an hour on approach to junction 6, with disruption to continue until at least 8pm.

A post on Thames Valley Police social media said its officers were also in attendance as the HGV, a hay lorry, had caught fire and was causing 'significant smoke blowing into the Meadow Way area of Dorney Reach'.

Drivers have been urged to follow a diversion listed on the National Highways website, which said:

  • Exit the M4 at J6, on to the A355 southbound and then the A332
  • At the roundabout with the A308, take the 3rd exit on to the A308 towards Maidenhead
  • At Braywick Roundabout, take the 2nd exit on to the A308(M) and rejoin the M4 westbound at Holyport Interchange.
